One hundred and eleven years ago tomorrow, the Games of the first modern Olympiad opened in Athens. Since then, the Games opening ceremonies, inspired by the ceremonies of Ancient Greece, have developed, without losing their spectacular and unique aspects. The Opening Ceremony of the first modern Olympic Games is a good example.

New data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, reported in the online version of Science today (22nd March), shows how the small moon, Enceladus, is weighing down Saturn's magnetic field so much that the field is rotating slower than the planet. This phenomenon makes it nearly impossible to measure the length of the Saturn day using techniques that work at the other giant planets.

Future fuels will be demonstrated at the Biomass Conference and Study Tour, 14th –15th of May at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). The conference is being held in association with the CAT’s Graduate School for The Environment. Presenters are local and international biomass experts.

Ed Miliband, Minister for the Third Sector, today announced that the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) will manage a new £30m programme to enable community-led third sector organisations to own and run under-used public buildings.
