Rodman & Rodman explain that parties have been pretending to be the IRS with the objective of obtaining personal information via email for potentially damaging uses.

The scammers have been sending email to taxpayers stating the IRS has calculated their ‘fiscal activity’ and that they are eligible to receive a tax refund. The taxpayer is prompted to follow a link to a ‘Get your tax refund’ page which is a replica of the authentic IRS ‘Where’s My Refund’ page. Once there, the taxpayer is asked to enter his/her social security number and a credit card number.

According to Steve Rodman, CPA, “The counterfeit web page looks very much like the real thing, which can really deceive taxpayers into providing their personal information. The IRS never uses email to contact taxpayers. Any email that is purportedly from the IRS should be viewed as spam.”

Rodman & Rodman advises taxpayers who receive the bogus IRS email NOT to open any attachments or click on any links.
